Gabriel J. Catanus, PhD
Scholar & Teacher
Currently, I'm revising a manuscript about Filipino American Christianity that will be published with Cascade Books, an imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers. I've also recently published an article for the International Bulletin of Mission Research (IBMR) and I'll soon be contributing a chapter to the volume, Global Readings of the New Testament (Baker Academic).
During the 2023-2024 academic year, I'll also be teaching Christian Ethics (ET 501) and Introduction to Global Christian Tradition (SF 502) at Fuller Seminary.
----------
In February 2022, I was appointed Affiliate Assistant Professor of Theology and Ethics and Director of the Filipino American Ministry Initiative (FAMI) at Fuller. During Fall 2022, I also taught Christian ethics as a Visiting Lecturer at Asian Theological Seminary in Quezon City, Philippines.
----------
During Summer 2021, I had the honor of co-leading a seminar titled "Filipino American Context and Ministry" with Dr. Daniel Lee (course poster pictured below), a Fuller colleague. We had great students joining us from throughout the U.S., the Philippines, and Hong Kong.
----------
In January 2021, after teaching Christian theology and ethics at Loyola University Chicago and Northern Seminary, I served through 2021 as Associate Director of both the Paul G. Hiebert Center for World Christianity and Global Theology and the Thriving Immigrant Congregations Initiative (TICI) at Trinity International University. TICI is a 5-year research project supported by the Lilly Endowment. I also joined the editorial board for ChristianityNext.
----------
In December 2020, I received my Ph.D with Distinction in the Integrative Studies in Ethics and Theology (ISET) from Loyola University Chicago. My research and writing interests include, in no particular order: migration and immigration, Filipino American studies, contextual theologies, postcolonial and decolonial studies, Christian social ethics, pastoral and political theologies, and the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Before my Ph.D program, I graduated from DePaul University (B.A.), the divinity school of Trinity International University (M.Div, cum laude), did some Th.M work at McCormick Theological Seminary, and had a short stint at an unnamed Chicago law school.
My vocation also includes speaking at conferences and guest lecturing in academic and ecclesial settings. To date, my work has been used in courses at Fuller Theological Seminary, the University of California at Irvine, Yale Divinity School, Wheaton College, the Claremont School of Theology, and Loyola University Chicago.
